  WASH
OR DRYCLEAN? |
Both
silk and rayon fibers dryclean very well. If the manufacturer
has not tested for appropriate care instructions, however, certain
dyes or finishes applied to the fibers may react adversely to
drycleaning. Washing may damage garments containing sizing and/or
dyes that are sensitive to water. It is important that you follow
the care label on the garment.
|
  PERSPIRATION
PROBLEMS |
Perspiration
contains salts that can damage fabric, especially silk. This
can cause the fabric to change color and may disintegrate and
weaken silk. Have perspiration stains removed as soon as possible
to avoid permanent staining.
|
  LIGHT
& CHEMICAL DAMAGE |
Most
dyes eventually fade with exposure to sunlight or artificial
light. Color failure may occur rapidly on exposed areas, such
as shoulders, collars, and sleeves. Many blue, green, and lavender
dyes are light-sensitive, especially on silk and wool fabrics.
Household substances also can affect dyes. Be careful not to
expose fabrics to alkaline toiletries, such as toothpaste, hair
spray, perfume, or deodorant, which contain alcohol. The acidity
of lemon juice affects some dyes. Bleach, one of the most common
causes of color loss and fabric damage, should be used with
extreme care.
|
  STARCH |
Heavy,
medium, light or no starch. Which should you choose? Testing
at the International Fabricare Institute has found that starch
affects the wear-life of shirts in several ways. Starch acts
as a shield, protecting the surface of the shirt from abrasion
and some staining. Soil will accumulate on the surface, but
will not penetrate into the fibers. Also, starch increases the
light reflection of the fabric, making it appear whiter. Unfortunately,
starch will decrease the fabric strength and cause some creasing
and breaking of fibers. Your IFI member professional launderer
and drycleaner recommends medium starch as the best choice.
|
  SHRINKAGE
|
The
manufacturer
has already allowed for the normal two percent and progressive
shrinkage requirements. This shrinkage is usually not enough
to cause a complaint. Shrinkage beyond this is usually due to
poorly stabilized materials. Shrinkage complaints can easily
be resolved by measuring the collar and sleeve length. If these
measurements correspond to the shirt size, it has not shrunk.
